Rabat is the capital of the kingdom of Morocco. It is located by the Atlantic Ocean, 40 km from the city of Kenitra. It is separated from Salé by the mouth of Oued Bouregreg.

The city of Rabat was founded by the Almohad dynasty in 1150. Its name comes from the Arabic ribat which means fortress. A fortress that was built in place of Fort Almoravide under the name of Sanhaja. Subsequently, Rabat was extended by the two sultans Yussuf Abu Yakub and his son Yakub Al-Mansou (the vitorious) to cover several hundred hectares.

Rabat is home to a multitude of historic monuments, the majority of which is part of the Islamic heritage going back to the Almohad era like the Hassan tower which was built by Yakub Al-Mansour and to other eras like the Oudayas Kasbah and the Medina. Several of these monuments are inscribed on the World Heritage List.

In the middle of the 18th century, the city of Rabat was elected capital and one of the imperial cities of the kingdom during the reign of Sultan Mohammed III.

Despite the accelerated movement of urbanization, Rabat has managed to preserve a magnificent facet of its natural and cultural beauty. Dream beaches like Al-Harhoura or Golden Sands, the National Zoological Garden and splendid surroundings make Rabat a top seaside town.
